A few details, answered

Questions about lawn mowing.

How often should I mow my lawn?

Follow the grass’s growth, not just the calendar. Mow often enough to remove no more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. Faster growth calls for more frequent cuts; when growth slows, mowing can be spaced further apart.

How short should I cut my grass?

The right height depends on your grass type. For tall fescue, about 3 to 4 inches is a useful growing-season target, especially in summer. Avoid scalping the lawn, and remove no more than one-third of the blade in a single mowing.

Should I bag grass clippings or leave them?

Short clippings can usually stay on the lawn, where they break down and return nutrients to the soil. They do not normally cause thatch. Heavy clumps should be removed or spread out so they do not smother the grass underneath.

Can I mow wet grass?

It is better to wait until the grass dries and the ground is firm. Wet clippings can clump and smother the lawn, while mowing soft ground can leave ruts. After rain, lawn conditions should guide the next cut.
